Salary structure by level (US, mid-2026)

Total compensation typically includes base + equity + bonus. Ranges below reflect mid-market developer-product companies. Top-tier (FAANG-class AI labs, Stripe, etc.) pay above these ranges; early-stage startups pay below.

Salary structure by region (approximate, 2026)

Ratios to US compensation at equivalent levels:

RegionRatioNotes
US (SF Bay / NYC)1.0Reference point
US (other major cities, remote)0.85–0.95Some companies apply geo-pay-bands
Canada (Toronto / Vancouver)0.75–0.90
UK (London)0.65–0.85Substantial variance between US-HQ remote and UK-HQ roles
Germany / Netherlands / France0.55–0.80
Nordics (Stockholm, Copenhagen)0.65–0.85
Eastern Europe (Poland, Czechia, Portugal)0.40–0.65
Israel (Tel Aviv)0.75–0.95Strong AI/security DevRel hiring
India (Bangalore, Hyderabad)0.25–0.55USD-pay remote roles can break these bands
Singapore0.65–0.85
Japan (Tokyo)0.55–0.75
Australia (Sydney, Melbourne)0.75–0.90
Brazil / Mexico / LATAM0.30–0.60USD-pay remote roles can break these bands
Nigeria / Kenya / South Africa0.20–0.45Same caveat — remote-USD roles outliers

These are crude approximations. The single biggest variable is whether the role pays in local-currency local-band or in USD against a global band. The 2020–2024 remote boom expanded global USD-band hiring substantially; some companies have since recalibrated to local bands.

Hiring patterns to know

A few observations worth knowing if you are looking:

  • AI companies hire faster than they hire well. Senior AI-DevRel openings are abundant; many of them are filled by hires who lack the specific AI-engineering depth the role requires. Differentiate on demonstrated AI-engineering portfolio.
  • Remote-first companies have specific cultural fit demands. Async writing skill is a real filter at fully-remote companies (GitLab, Vercel, Cloudflare, Postman, HashiCorp). A strong written-portfolio applicant has meaningful advantage.
  • Marketing-reporting roles offer lower comp than engineering-reporting roles at the same level. Check the reporting line during the recruiter call.
  • Director / VP roles often go through founder networks first. Public postings reflect about 60–70% of senior DevRel openings; the rest are filled through referrals.
  • AI-Engineer-specific roles increasingly require a portfolio of LLM-application work. Generic developer-content portfolios underperform.
  • Remote-from-LATAM into US-HQ-roles has become a notable hiring lane in 2024–2026, especially at AI companies and PLG developer products. Strong English written portfolio matters more than location.

Roles in adjacent functions worth considering

For DevRel professionals who feel limited by current DevRel postings, several adjacent functions have been expanding hiring substantially since 2023:

  • Developer Experience Engineer at product / engineering orgs (often pays more than equivalent DevRel level).
  • Solutions Engineer / Pre-sales Engineer at developer-product companies (higher OTE on commission structures).
  • Product Manager, Developer Platform — Many former DevRel professionals transition here.
  • Technical Writer / Documentation Engineer — Mature roles at large developer companies (Stripe, Twilio, AWS).
  • Customer Engineer (Google Cloud’s term; equivalent at other clouds) — Pre-sales technical role.
  • Open Source Program Manager (OSPM) — In OSPOs at companies that fund or contribute to open source.
  • AI Engineer / ML Engineer — Senior DevRel professionals with strong AI-application portfolios are increasingly moving to direct AI-engineering roles.
